Offbeat Meru

Meru National Park is untamed Africa at its most alluring. Beginning in the

foothills of Mount Kenya and extending into the arid bush of eastern Kenya, Meru lies within an 1800km2 wilderness strewn with baobabs – part of the domain made famous in Born Free. Most of Africa’s big game species flourish within the park. Offbeat’s Meru Camp is situated on the edge of Meru National Park and Bisanandi National Reserve giving easy access to both areas for some ‘wild’ game viewing. Meru National Park is home to the big five, after the recent re-introduction of Rhino, as well as a great number of other species including Grevy's Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Leopard, Gerenuk and Lesser Kudu. The park has 13 rivers which flow through the area encouraging a spectacular variety of birdlife. Immortalised by Joy Adamson in her book 'Born Free' and with only 2 lodges the likelihood of seeing anyone else while you stay here is small - you feel you have the park to yourself.

 

The accommodation

Offbeat Meru Camp is a small and exclusive camp, meaning that service is highly personal. The camp has six luxury tents, all with en suite shower rooms, flushing loos, huge beds and internal lighting. Being a seasonal camp and to give you an ever better feeling for being outdoors, the tents of Offbeat Meru are placed directly on the ground, not being on cemented platforms like so many other camps. The camp is situated above the pretty Bisanandi River; a murmuring stream lined with palms and shaded by large acacia tortilis trees. Each tent is furnished with a large iron bed, and has its own ensuite bathroom, with traditional bucket shower and flushing toilet.

In addition, there is 24 hour solar lighting in the tents,

whilst the rest of the camp is lit by traditional tilly lamps. Informal dining is hosted in the mess tent or around the campfire. There is also a spacious 'mess' tent with comfortable sofas, a writing table and bar.This area of Kenya gets quite hot in summer, and there is no better way of relaxing after an intense moring of gamewatching by sipping ice chilled drinks in the camps stunning infinity pool. The camp works closely with the Masai community and they have helped building the camp. Many Masai have been trained over the years to be guide. Meru Offbeat camp is a remote camp with a fabulous sense of adventure. For those seeking more than just a well organised safari, Offbeat Meru is the place to go.

 

Things to do

Horseback safaris

Horseback riding and landrover safaris are organised from our luxury mobile tented camps in remote areas.  Well schooled thoroughbred and thoroughbred cross horses, of wich many are home bred out of the best mares, are being used for these safaris. You will be 4 – 6 hours in the saddle for your safaris and picknick lunches are carried in saddle bags on the riding days. It might be necessary to do some walking on foot over rough terrain. Riding safaris always have landrovers along for game drives. Landrover safaris encourage walking are conducted with an armed guide.

Other activities

Days are tailored to suit guest's requirements. Activities include day and evening game drives; walking safaris with armed guides; bush breakfasts, picnics and sundowners; fly fishing in the local rivers. This area of Kenya gets quite hot during the dry season. After an active morning in the bush there's no better feeling than coming back to camp and cooling off in the stunning infinity swimming pool watching the wildlife as it comes to drink from the Bisanadi River below you.
